In 1982, at the age of sixteen, I left school and joined my father’s company, R.W. Batten Ltd, which had been proudly operating since the late 1950s. My brother Stephen had already been with the business for several years, and together we immersed ourselves in every aspect of the trade.
We gained invaluable hands-on experience working throughout Sussex and Surrey, carrying out road surfacing, paving, and maintenance works for a wide range of clients, including West Sussex and Surrey County Councils, local district councils, and private developers. Those early years laid the groundwork for everything that followed — instilling in us a strong work ethic, a deep respect for quality workmanship, and the belief that every project, no matter the size, deserves our full attention.
It was a time when hard work, family values, and traditional craftsmanship were at the heart of everything we did — principles that continue to guide our company to this day.
By the early 1990s, after a decade of learning every aspect of the trade alongside my father and brother, it felt like the right time to take the next step. In 1993, together with my father, mother, and brother Stephen, we founded Batten Civil Engineering Ltd — a family-run company built on the values we had lived by for years: quality, reliability, and integrity.
From the very start, our goal was simple — to deliver first-class civil engineering and surfacing works, carried out with care and personal involvement on every site. We have always believed that our clients deserve not only a quality finish, but also the reassurance that comes from having a family member directly involved throughout each project.
Over the years, our business grew steadily through word of mouth and long-standing relationships, rather than advertising. Our reputation for quality over quantity earned us the trust of both public authorities and private clients, many of whom we continue to work with to this day.
What began as a small family venture has developed into a well-respected civil engineering company, combining traditional workmanship with modern techniques — but our values remain exactly the same as they were in the beginning.

As the company evolved through the 2000s, we continued to build on our strong foundations, expanding both our expertise and the scale of our projects. Our portfolio grew to include everything from private estates and residential developments to commercial and heritage sites across the South of England and beyond.
We were among the first in the industry to pioneer resin-bound surfaces, beginning in the mid-2000s. Since then, we have built an extensive and varied portfolio of resin-bound installations — from domestic driveways to prestigious properties such as Winfield House, the official residence of the United States Ambassador, and the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple on Victoria Embankment, London.
Our long-standing relationship with the Arora Group, owners of the Renaissance Hotel at Heathrow Airport, has seen us undertake major resurfacing and infrastructure projects over several decades — a testament to the trust and confidence our clients place in us.
Despite the company’s growth, our approach has never changed: we pride ourselves on hands-on family involvement, attention to detail, and a commitment to delivering lasting quality. Every project we undertake has a Batten family member on site, ensuring our standards remain consistent and our clients receive the personal service that has defined us for over four decades.
